Now let's dive into the review:

Test Mouse - HTX 4K with Jades skates

SIZE: The SGG Alpha pad (s) comes in two different sizing. 900x400mm (XXL) and 500x500 (XL) with 4mm thickness.

LOOKS: The pad that I ordered is plain black with SGG branding located on the bottom left of the pad. Otherwise, the other options for this pads are shown below.

They all are unique in their own ways. If I can get a new pad it would be the Ice Dojo.

PRICE: From a gamer's standpoint, this mousepad being priced at USD 24.99 (XL Sizing (500x500mm) and USD 29.99 (XXL Sizing (900x400mm) - before tax / shipping; competes with other budget pads out in the market like X-raypads, LGG pads, and EspTiger pads. All are fantastic options but with the price of SGG Alpha being at USD 29.99 I can easily recommend this pad to anyone.

STITCHING/BASE: The stitching on around on the SGG Alpha is good and tight. I did not notice any fraying or loose stitching during my 2+ week testing phase. I would say that this stitching is better than some X-raypad mousepad that I have owned. Stitching felt to me that it is slightly above the surface though it was not something that bothered me while using the pad. All I can say is that this stitching is not like Artisan level so do not expect that.

PACKAGING: The SGG Alpha mousepad arrived in a protective bag that was packed inside a plain brown box. Nothing to fancy with the packaging. The pad was not tightly rolled (*see screenshot from YT video below on how it was packaged*) which allowed the mousepad to lay flat out of the box. Comparing to other pads that I have received in the past - this one laid flat without needing to do any reverse rolling.

PERFORMANCE/SURFACE: Let me start by saying that this pad is not coated - according to SGG detailed page; they used a non-coated Amundsen Fabric for the surface. Longevity-wise I cannot comment on it as after the 2+ weeks of usage / writing up the review, I put off the rotation.

The surface of the pad is textured though not as rough as an Artisan Hien or Aqua Control 2. It does feel close to a LGG Venus (regular) out of the box but slower than Hien. If you are looking for a mousepad that offers mid point of the Venus and Hien for a budget price point - SGG Alpha is it. While testing the pad, I messed around with different mouse skates - some of them were quieter when gliding the mouse across. The dynamic friction of the Alpha is low though it's stopping power is rather reliant on the user's mouse control. SGG Alpha's firmness is on the soft side of things so you can dig in for extra stopping force. Lastly - the pad is humid-resistant and from using it and having the humidifier on it did not make any difference.

TLDR:

Tested the SGG Alpha with HTX 4K with Jade Skates.

  • Size: XL: 500x500mm & XXL: 900x400mm | 4mm thickness

  • Design: The mousepad is available in 5 different variations - as shown above. Cannot go wrong with either of them, all looks good just depends on which colorway matches your setup best!

  • Stitching/Base: Tight, good-quality stitching with no fraying / loose threads after 2+ weeks of use. Stitching is slightly above surface but not bothersome. For the base, it is using a rubber base that prevents it from sliding.

  • Packaging: Arrived rolled inside a plain brown cardboard box, laid flat easily. Includes protective bag.

  • Surface: SGG Alpha uses non-coated Amundsen Fabric with a textured surface; similar to LGG Venus but not 1:1. It offers a good balance of speed and control at a budget price. The pad's firmness is soft, allowing for extra stopping force when you dig in. Lastly the pad is humid-resistant.
